4 Step Buying Process

1. Type Of Compressor - There are four types of compressors: reciprocating or piston style compressor, rotary screw compressor...

diesel or gas driven compressor, and an oil-free compressor.

Reciprocating or piston style compressors are great up until about 40 to 50 CFM. Anything beyond that a rotary screw compressor will probably be your best bet.

The pressure - measured in PSI(pounds per square inch) is another important factor while choosing your air compressor. Most two stage reciprocating units can produce somewhere between 175 to 250 psi depending on the setup and the manufacturer. Rotary screw compressors are single stage and operate normally between 100 to 125 psi. Two stage options are also available in rotary screw compressors but these are for very large applications such as manufacturing. 2. Sizing A Compressor - There are a few variables that go into sizing a compressor properly. The first is CFM followed by pressure...

All compressors are rated by CFM. Assess your tools to determine a ballpark of how much CFM they will require to operate efficiently. Add10 to 20 percent to this amount to accommodate for leaks and future expansion. CFM and horsepower are directly proportional. Once you have the CFM, then you can determine what horsepower your compressor needs to be.

Next, you will need to determine the optimal pressure for your equipment. A good way to determine this is to contact the manufacturer of the equipment.

The last variable to keep in mind is the electrical. Make sure the compressor you select has the same electrical setup as the setup at your facility. Contact a certified electrician in your area if you have any questions or concerns about the electrical system at your facility.

Tank or storage for the compressed air. If your air compressor doesn't come with a tank, we highly recommend that you get one. You should size the tank based on three to four gallons of storage per horsepower of the compressor.

Piping or distribution system. We recommend that you use modular compressed air pipe that we sell in installation kits.

Air dryer - a byproduct of compressed air is moisture which is inevitable. Your projects can be ruined if the piping is contaminated with water. An air dryer is designed to remove most of the moisture from the air.

Filtration - even oil-free compressors will pick up contamination and different types of vapor in the air and compress it and send it down to your distribution system. We always recommend that you purchase line filters to filter this air.

A regulator is another helpful component. It is designed to restrict pressure downstream. It makes it easy for you to adjust the amount of pressure that you want your system to run at.

Drains are another essential component of an air compressor. There are several types of drains that should be connected to tanks on systems line filters and air dryers. These drains help remove the moisture after each component.
